What is Colourstart?
Colourstart is licensed by the MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency) and is the only clinically proven test for hair colour allergy (PPD) in the UK.
Colourstart is like a transparent plaster and can be applied in the salon or at home, whichever you prefer. This is a one-off test, that need not be repeated, subject to a negative reaction recorded in the Colourstart Passport App. This is known as your “Passport’.
Prior to every colour application you will be prompted to answer 7 questions in your Passport, which will take you about 30 seconds to complete. It identifies if anything has changed that could increase the chances of a reaction. The test applies to all brands and colours, meaning you can have any colour applied in the future, without the inconvenience of yet another test.
As this is a medical test there is an associated cost of £15, as stated above this is a one-off cost that not only supports your safety but means you need not worry about allergy testing again.
Why are we making changes?
In 2024 a new harmonised professional skin testing protocol was announced by leading industry bodies and associations. This new protocol defines a clear benchmark that all hair professionals, insurers and hair colour brands should meet in order to safely colour. There are two options, the traditional Allergy Alert Test, and Colourstart. The traditional method of testing, the Allergy Alert Test (AAT), is now near impossible to manage in our salon.
What changes are we making?
Whilst our client’s safety is paramount, we recognise the inconvenience the new AAT would cause, so we are now using the Colourstart test for all our colour services.
Do not use Colourstart if you:
- suspect or know that you are allergic to PPD or any of the other ingredients of this medicine
- have active dermatitis on your skin (e.g. redness, swelling, itching)
- have previously experienced an allergy to hair colorant
- are pregnant or breast-feeding
- are taking oral or topical steroids or immunosuppressant medicines
- have a black henna tattoo, or had a reaction to a black henna tattoo
